After learning three years of Arts & Design in school, Jeft decided to drop-out of formal school. It wasn’t an easy decision to make as he knows Arts & Design are his callings. However, to reduce the financial burden of his parents, he decided to learn a skill which will enable him to start working in the quickest time possible. And hairstyling was the next best option for Jeft.

At the tender age of nineteen years old, Jeft moved to Singapore to pursue a career in hairstyling. Very quickly, he realized language was his biggest challenge. Unlike Singapore’s education system, English wasn’t the first language for most schools in Malaysia.

His very first job was as an Assistant with Supercut hair salon located in Novena. Jeft recalled that first year as the most crucial part of his career and urged fresh young hairstylist not to skip that experience and learning opportunity.

“It is a real shame to forgo the opportunity of learning from others.”

Fast-forward a few years, he joined Kimage Group and stayed with them for seven years. He was rising very quickly from a hairstylist to a Branch Manager and humbly credited his success to luck. Jeft shared some of his most significant learning curves as a young Manager.

His eagerness to prove himself as a Manager created many conflicts between him and other stylists. But he was grateful for the guidance and mentorship from Nancy and Monica (bosses of Kimage Group). Some of the many learning opportunities that were offered to him by Kimage Group include; education with Sassoon academy in Shanghai and completion of ITEC certification.

After X Room located in SMU (Singapore Management University) Dhoby Ghaut campus is Jeft’s latest venture with his younger brother; Jayden Chang. He enjoyed working with students because of their energy and openness in terms of trend and style.

“The road to becoming a successful hairstylist is a long and rocky one, be patient, and enjoy the process.”
